In 1911, T. H. Birdsong founded Birdsong Peanuts.  Birdsong was originally a storage company, but it began milling peanuts in the mid-thirties.  Birdsong Peanuts became a division of the Birdsong Corporation in 1974, when Birdsong Storage Company and American Cold Storage, Inc. merged under the name of Birdsong Corporation. 

In 1985, Birdsong Peanuts expanded into the Southeast by purchasing Farmers Gin & Warehouse Company in Blakely, GA.  In 1992 the company purchased Blakely Peanut Company.  Birdsong Corporation's home office is located in Suffolk, Virginia.  The president and chief executive officer is Jeff Johnson.  
   
In Blakely, Birdsong Peanuts buys peanuts from local peanut farmers.  There peanuts are shelled and then distributed worldwide.  Birdsong Peanuts currently employs 125 people in Early County.
